Long associated with light and protection, peridot has fascinated civilizations for millennia. The ancient Egyptians called it the “gem of the sun,” believing it could ward off nighttime terrors, especially when set in gold. Others tied it with donkey hair around the left arm to repel evil spirits.
The name peridot is derived from the Arabic word “faridat,” meaning “gem.” Most peridot forms deep within the Earth’s mantle, brought to the surface by volcanic activity, though rare specimens have also been discovered in meteorites—a testament to its otherworldly origins.
One of the earliest known sources was Zabargad (St. John’s Island) in the Red Sea, where ancient miners once mistook peridot for topaz. Cleopatra’s famed “emeralds” may in fact have been peridot, and even the 200-carat gems in Cologne Cathedral, long believed to be emeralds, are now confirmed as peridot.
