Apatite: The Deceptive Beauty of the Mineral World
Named in 1786 by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner, apatite is a group of phosphate minerals often confused with others due to its wide range of colors and crystal habits. Its name comes from the Greek word ἀπατάω (apatáō), meaning “to deceive,” a nod to its tendency to be mistaken for more familiar minerals like beryl, peridot, or fluorite.
Though Werner’s original specimen was later reclassified as fluorapatite in 1860 by mineralogist Karl Friedrich August Rammelsberg, the name apatite endured and now refers to the entire group. Apatite is valued not just for its scientific significance, but also for its vivid blues, greens, and neon hues—especially in gem-quality crystals and jewelry.
This collection includes carefully selected apatite specimens and cut stones, chosen for color intensity, transparency, and structure.
