Apophyllite: A Brilliant Flake of the Volcanic Earth
Apophyllite is a striking group of phyllosilicate minerals known for their glassy transparency and well-formed crystal structures. The name comes from the Greek word ἀποφυλλίζω (apophylliso), meaning “it flakes off,” referring to the mineral’s tendency to exfoliate or flake apart when heated—due to the release of bound water.
This flaking can also occur through light pressure or exposure to acids, making apophyllite both visually captivating and structurally delicate. Most often found in vesicles within basalt and other volcanic rocks, apophyllite crystals commonly occur alongside zeolites, forming radiating sprays or pyramidal clusters.
This collection features hand-selected apophyllite specimens, chosen for clarity, form, and association with complementary volcanic minerals.
