Azurite was known in the pre-classicalĀ ancient world. It was used inĀ ancient EgyptĀ as a pigment, obtained from mines inĀ Sinai.Ā Ancient MesopotamianĀ writers report the use of a specialĀ mortar and pestleĀ for grinding it. It does not appear to have been used inĀ ancient RomanĀ wall paintings but Roman writers certainly knew about its use as a pigment.Ā TheĀ fusingĀ of glass and azurite was developed in ancient Mesopotamia.
