Background:
Amber is perhaps best known for its natural inclusions, which preserve a window into life millions of years ago. As tree resin slowly fossilized, it trapped insects such as mosquitos, flies, and beetles, along with fragments of plants, leaves, and pine needles. These inclusions make Baltic amber both scientifically significant and visually captivating.
In antiquity, amber fascinated philosophers and collectors alike. Pliny the Elder described amber as succinum (“tree juice”), noting its origin in pine resin and its distinctive scent when burned. Throughout history, Baltic amber has been prized for jewelry, ornamentation, and even medicinal uses, admired both for its beauty and its natural record of prehistoric life.
