Background:
Ethiopian opal is renowned for its vivid play-of-color, with flashes of red, green, blue, and yellow that shift in the light. Discovered in the Wollo Province in the early 2000s, these opals quickly gained recognition as some of the most vibrant and affordable gem-quality opals available.
Historically, opal has carried many associations. In the Middle Ages, it was believed to bring good luck, as its spectrum of colors represented the virtues of all gemstones combined. Later, its reputation dimmed following Sir Walter Scott’s 1829 novel Anne of Geierstein, which linked opals to ill fortune—causing sales across Europe to plummet for decades. Today, opal has reclaimed its place as a gemstone of beauty, individuality, and light play.
