Background:
Tourmaline is a gemstone celebrated for its extraordinary range of colors. In the 18th century, brightly colored stones from Sri Lanka—then Ceylon—were brought to Europe by the Dutch East India Company, prized as both curiosities and jewelry gems. Known as the “Ceylonese Magnet,” tourmaline’s pyroelectric properties fascinated collectors and scientists alike, capable of attracting and repelling hot ashes.
By the 19th century, tourmaline was used in early scientific optics to polarize light. In jewelry history, it became associated with prestige and refinement: Empress Dowager Cixi of China was so enamored with pink tourmaline that she nearly monopolized its production from California mines in her lifetime.
These Brazilian contour bands highlight tourmaline’s brilliance through multi-color marquise cuts, designed to layer elegantly or wear as individual accents.
