Tourmaline is one of the most color-diverse minerals on Earth, celebrated for its vivid hues and unique properties. Brightly colored tourmalines from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) captivated European collectors in the 17th and 18th centuries, brought in large quantities by the Dutch East India Company to satisfy growing demand for exotic curiosities.

Sometimes called the “Ceylonese Magnet,” tourmaline was admired not only for its beauty but also for its pyroelectric properties, which allowed it to attract and repel particles when heated. In the 19th century, scientists even used tourmaline to polarize light, shining rays through polished crystals to study optical phenomena.

The gem's allure transcended science. Empress Dowager Cixi of China famously adored pink tourmaline, acquiring nearly all the gem-quality production from San Diego County during her final years.
