AmmonoidsĀ are a group ofĀ extinctĀ marineĀ molluscĀ animals in the subclassĀ AmmonoideaĀ of theĀ classĀ Cephalopoda. These molluscs, commonly referred to asĀ ammonites, are more closely related to livingĀ coleoidsĀ (i.e.,Ā octopuses,Ā squidĀ andĀ cuttlefish) than they are to shelledĀ nautiloidsĀ such as the livingĀ NautilusĀ species. The earliest ammonites appeared during theĀ Devonian, with the last species vanishing during theĀ CretaceousāPaleogene extinction event.
Ammonites are excellentĀ index fossils, and linking the rock layer in which a particular species or genus is found to specificĀ geologic time periodsĀ is often possible.Ā
The name "ammonite", from which the scientific term is derived, was inspired by the spiral shape of their fossilized shells, which somewhat resemble tightly coiledĀ rams' horns.Ā Pliny the ElderĀ (d.Ā 79 AD near Pompeii) called fossils of these animalsĀ ammonis cornuaĀ ("horns of Ammon") because the Egyptian god Ammon (Amun) was typically depicted wearing rams' horns. Often, the name of an ammonite genus ends in -ceras, which is fromĀ ĪŗĪĻĪ±ĻĀ (kĆ©ras) meaning "horn".
