Since prehistoric and ancient times humans have depicted and interpreted the Moon,Ā particularly for astrologyĀ and religion, asĀ lunar deity.

Ā

Iconographically the crescent was used inĀ MesopotamiaĀ as the primary symbol ofĀ Nanna/SĆ®n,Ā the ancientĀ SumerianĀ lunar deity,Ā who was the father ofĀ Innana/Ishtar, the goddess of the planetĀ VenusĀ andĀ Utu/Shamash, the god of the SunĀ Ā all three often depicted next to each other.Ā

The crescent was further used as an element of lunarĀ deities wearing headgears or crowns in an arrangement reminiscent of horns, as in the case of the ancient GreekĀ SeleneĀ or the ancient EgyptianĀ Khonsu. Selene is associated withĀ ArtemisĀ and paralleled by the RomanĀ Luna, which both are occasionally depictedĀ driving a chariot, like the Hindu lunar deityĀ Chandra.

The different or sharingĀ aspectsĀ of deities withinĀ pantheonsĀ has been observed in many cultures, especially by later or contemporary culture, particularly formingĀ triple deities. The Moon in Roman mythology for example has been associated withĀ JunoĀ andĀ Diana, while Luna being identified as theirĀ bynameĀ and as part of a triplet (diva triformis) with Diana andĀ Proserpina,Ā HecateĀ being identified as their binding manifestation asĀ trimorphos.

TheĀ star and crescentĀ arrangement goes back to the Bronze Age, representing either the Sun and Moon, or the Moon and planetĀ Venus, in combination. It came to represent the goddess Artemis or Hecate, and via the patronage of Hecate came to be used as aĀ symbol of Byzantium, possibly influencing the development of theĀ Ottoman flag, specifically the combination of the Turkish crescent with a star.Ā Since then theĀ heraldricĀ use of the star and crescent proliferated becoming a popularĀ symbol for IslamĀ (as theĀ hilalĀ of theĀ Islamic calendar) andĀ for a range of nations.

InĀ Roman CatholicĀ Marian veneration, theĀ Virgin MaryĀ (Queen of Heaven) has been depicted since theĀ late middle agesĀ on a crescent and adorned with stars. InĀ IslamĀ MuhammadĀ is particularly attributed with the Moon through the so-calledĀ splitting of the MoonĀ (Arabic:Ā Ų§Ł†Ų“Ł‚Ų§Ł‚ Ų§Ł„Ł‚Ł…Ų±) miracle.

The contrast between the brighter highlands and the darker maria have been seen by different cultures forming abstract shapes, which are among others theĀ Man in the MoonĀ or theĀ Moon RabbitĀ (e.g. the ChineseĀ Tu'er YeĀ or inĀ Indigenous American mythologies, as with the aspect of theĀ Mayan Moon goddess).

In WesternĀ alchemyĀ silverĀ is associated with the Moon, and gold with the Sun.
